Welcome to my Resource Page for K-12 Education

The philosophies and frameworks below encompass important aspects of my values for learning in the K-12 education setting.

Click on the links provided to learn more about each approach.

STUDIO HABITS OF THE MIND

The Studio Habits of the Mind are a research based approach framework for supporting curriculum in art education at any age level. They were design by Lois Hetland, Ellen Winner, Shirley Veenema, Kimberly Sheridan, Diane Jacquith, and Jill Hogan at Harvard Project Zero School of Education.  These 8 habits are essential to building a strong art program at any level, and are the driving force behind my art instruction in the elementary classroom.

They include:

1. Develop Craft

2. Engage & Persist

3. Envision

4. Express

5. Observe

6. Reflect

7. Stretch & Explore

8. Understand (Arts) Community

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

Multicultural education, or culturally relevant teaching, is the process of designing an inclusive curriculum that creates meaningful learning experiences for students of all races, gender, orientation, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities.

My philosophy and approach to culturally relevant teaching is rooted in theory by James A. Banks and his approach to multicultural curriculum reform.

I am devoted to this reform and approach to education, and share my learning and experiences on this journey  through leading trainings and presentations.

Teaching for Artistic Behavior

Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) is a philosophy of choice based art education that regards students as artists, and engages them in authentic art making by teaching artistic skills and thinking processes.  The 8 Studio Habits of the Mind work to support TAB as students have real choice in their work, and create authentic art which is meaningful to them.

TAB supports a culturally relevant curriculum, and allows for students to infuse their experiences and voice in their work.
